OMG, I HAVE NOTHING I WANT TO WEAR…
Lately, I’ve found myself feeling disenchanted with the contents of my wardrobe. But this weekend it reached an all time low…
Running 10 minutes late already, I was standing in my towel staring blankly inside my closet. I had to pull together every morsel of maturity because what I wanted to do was hurl myself onto the floor and launch into a psychotic fit. I HAVE NOTHING TO WEAR, I kept whimpering in pathetic desperation until my husband finally walked over and started pulling things out, ‘What about this?’ He went through tons of stuff. Each item he suggested received an immediate response: too tight, too loose, too itchy, too low, too high, too sheer, too thick, too long, too short…
‘You’re right,’ he finally said. ‘You have nothing to wear.’
Umm… what? Other people aren’t meant to agree! The ‘I have nothing to wear’ dilemma is an age-old problem between a girl and her wardrobe. Of course, there is stuff to wear. It’s just a matter of whether you want to wear any of it. Clearly I don’t. I’m not entirely sure how I’ve reached this point of absolute disenchantment. Maybe it’s a passing phase? But, I’m thinking of making a pile of the things I love (I swear it will be like 10 items) and getting rid of the rest. I’ve done so many closet clear outs over the past year but it still feels like there is too much of what I don’t like. Does anyone else have this problem or am I just massively wardrobely challenged? I’ve started scouring online shops for pieces that would make my life easier when getting dressed – starting with tops. They aren’t anything revolutionary but I’ve always thought that getting your basics right is the first step.

I feel like that quite often, and sometimes end up slumped in front of my wardrobe in tears!

Ah, glad I’m not alone… but not glad to hear about the tears! Do you feel like you have an idea of what you want to wear but just don’t have it? I need to come up with a way to avoid having this feeling – it totally sucks. xx
Yeah sometimes you pick something and goes “if only i have a black leather skirt in this specific length it would be soooo perfect” but you dont have that skirt in that specific length *pulls hair*
I think many of us have the same problem as you.
By dint of buying, we do not know what to wear. It’s horrible because at the end we realize that we too quickly grow tired of a garment for X reasons.
I do not know if you know the blogger “Dead Fleurette” but I counsel thee to buy take a look at his blog. She has a beautiful design of the garment. I admire his courage, I just talked to my blog and I will try to emulate it.
Otherwise, I suggest you read this article http://www.lemonde.fr/livres/article/2012/03/28/rien-a-me-mettre-le-vetement-plaisir-et-supplice-d-elise-ricadat-et-lydia-taieb_1676832_3260.html#xtor=AL-32280258 (actually, it is in French but if you have 5 minutes you can use the translator, it is well worth it). Have a nice day, xx

Hello, hello, I have this problem daily, hence the shopping addiction. If you have nothing left in your wardrobe to wear, COME TO ANTWERP WITH US! You still have 24 hours to book and get on a train…
P.S. I can totes see you in some CdG Play and love the Acne.
Can completely emphasise, I even received a card from a friend a few years ago with the front saying “to the girl who has nothing to wear and not enough wardrobe space to put it in” sums me (and I’m sure quite a few others) perfectly. The annoying thing is that whenever I have one of those “i-have-nothing-to-wear” days it does spiral out of controls so even clothes I normally like don’t meet my expectations, annoying! xx
Yeah sometimes it happens to me too! Lately it’s the weather’s fault, the spring was coming but abruptly we’ve been sent back to winter. So my mind was already in spring-wearing mode and the shock left me with: I don’t have anything to wear!
And also with some bad experiences… like: Wow today it’s a sunny day so I wear spring clothes and… I freeze the entire day!!
Have a nice day!

I absolutely get you, I had this about 5 years ago & basically just started buying only neutral things, mostly black, mostly classic pieces with a couple of statement bits, so that everything went with everything else .etc It worked really well for a long time, but lately I feel it’s become more of a ‘uniform’, everyone knows me for wearing almost exclusively black & I’m getting a little bored of it now! On the plus side though, I have a great wardrobe of classics & it’s a good base to build on, I just need to go shopping for more statement pieces & start re-introducing some colour!
I think everyone goes through periods of it every so often, a good clean out always makes you feel better about it though I find! It’s half the reason I’ve started just making stuff myself now too (well, that & an expensive fashion degree going to waste!) that way I’m not looking at a closet full of stuff I’ve brought (and probably never even worn!) going “if only it was less tight/baggy/short/long .etc” I have no excuses now! Hah!
I totally understand what you are saying and realize that I have under a dozen things that I love to wear. I always go back to the basics that I have worn for years. That basic gray tee and jeans and please don’t forget those TOM’s. Maybe we all need to declutter our closets and bless those around us.
I totally agree. I have so much to wear but every now and then I get stuck. But I also feel guilty for having this feeling as it is greedy and pointless. You have so many clothes but don’t want to wear one of them. What I do is simple: I slip in my favorite black jeans and pull together a very classic blazer-shirt. xoxo
I feel you. In fact, I have this feeling every once a month, during PMS. I don’t know how exactly it relates, but it’s true. Weird me. =/
This has been me for the past month now. Even worse, I don’t like anything in the shops at the moment either, so it’s a double whammy. Don’t even get my started on mint green… I just keep coming back to jeans, white top, black blazer and varying statement necklaces. It’s ok, but it’s just so boring. I just packed to go back to uni yesterday and I actually have nothing in my suitcase. Oh the problems of the western world. x

Happens to me all the time. And then occasionally I stumble onto what feels like the perfect combination of basic items and I want to wear that and only that, everyday, forever. Until I hate it. And then, again, I have nothing to wear. There should be some sort of a charity for folks like us, handing out T by A Wang t-shirts and Rachel Comey shoes to ease our discomfort, right?
http://nomadic-d.blogspot.com/
YES! I always look at T by Alexander Wang and wish my entire closet was just made up of his slouchy basics! xx
Yup, same exact problem. I actually feel the same way right now, but when I start cleaning out my closet I realize that maybe I can keep this for later use or maybe this would be a good DIY project, and so I don’t really clean out my closet. I find that what helps me is I try to buy basic clothing (like you said) that are brand name. I have the commes de garcons striped top and I’m still in love with it. I’ve been trying to stick to more high end clothing, less buy and more quality sort of a thing–the tops that i actually really want rather than buying a look-a-like from h&m or zara and being semi-content. it may take a while to save up the money to afford it, but when you do buy it you’re more than satisfied for a lot longer.
Yup, we all have our first world problems.
Totally agree! That’s exactly the problem, it takes longer to save up for the good quality pieces and it’s SO TEMPTING to just get a quick fix from somewhere like Zara or H&M. xx
i feel your pain.
LOLED at the fact that Fred was around pulling stuff out of your wardrobe suggesting stuff, he is such a good man.
I like to think we have ‘nothing to wear’ just because wearing smae tshirt + jeans is so anti-blogger, but hey lately I’ve been doing that and I haven’t been happier (and comfortable…who knew).
TAKE THAT BACK
If you get the basics right, the rest should fall into place, or so we are led to believe. So buy the three items you have chosen and you will feel so much better. x
Poor Poor Jenny. Lets go shopping!
I feel like that all the time!! Going into meltdown the minute i spring open my doors; you always look great though!
I have plenty to wear at the moment – it’s just the wrong season! I have loads of spring/summer items with tags on them, but since it’s reverted back to winter in London, I’m still wearing my black winter items. It’s driving me mad.
I think the best thing I did for my wardrobe was discover a label that I LOVE. For me it’s French label Sandro, but if you can find one that you really connect with you’ll want to wear your pieces over and over. The cost per wear on my items far outweighs buying from highstreet retailers. NHG x
P.S I agree with the above comment on Dead Fleurette – I studied her blog long and hard!
Ahhhhhh, you understand my plight, I have a lot to wear but it depends on my mood (and figure) when I want to wear it. I love having an eclectic wardrobe and adding things to it constantly. I definitely want to buy more unique, quality items that I can wear for many seasons to come.
The secret is to be more with less! Having detoxed many wardrobes I completely agree with the ethos of keeping the items you love and getting rid of the rest. What’s more, I bet you would find that those ten items all suit you perfectly in terms of colouring and cut. Everyone has an instinctive sense of what suits them (that’s why you love those items) – however as there is so much ‘noise’ in our lives, it can often be hard to sort the wheat from the chaff. Working with what you love is the best place to start. Here’s my post on this – http://findmystyle.com/2012/be-more-with-less
So this is pretty awesome because I just had the same issue two days ago (slightly different ambience here in Mexico, you see) and my mom responded in the exact same way. “But of course I have tonnnneeeesssss of stuff (I just don’t want to wear any of them…!)”.
I suppose that is why fashion is such a profitable business

I think everyone (okay, maybe most women and a part of the male population) feel like this at some point. This has happened to me so often, I’m ashamed to admit. I found your husband’s response quite hilarious as I completely expected him to say you have a ton of clothes (as men usually do).

I`ve read this post yesterday, but had no time to leave a reply. damn that job that pays the bills and all the shitty clothes I no longer like. what is with this brain illness? and I tell you, it is illness. What else can explain this phenomenon?! My clothes don`t even fit to the closet they are in, and I still think every single morning (god forbid its fashion related event – then I go so loco!) – “I have nothing to wear!”. although I almost always buy sometnig classic, that would be wearable several seasons, that goes with everything. Buying trends happens rarely. like these mint jeans. So, I wonder, (this reminded me of Carrie, she always uses this phrase while writting an article – and did she had this problem too? – YES!) how is it possible to not like something you once longed for, saved for, and loved (for a day)??
